The very first Mother’s Day after the loss of a child or the passing of their mom might be the hardest one someone’s ever had.
Perhaps a card acknowledging their grief will bring the slightest bit of comfort and make them feel not quite as alone.
A dear friend lost her 9-year-old daughter to anaphylactic shock recently, so I came up with this card in memory of her daughter, Z.
The zip file contains SVGs for two different cards and their envelopes.
One option is a square card with flowers.
The other is a regular card with butterflies.
In these Cricut card SVGs, each of the elements are separate.
You can change the colors, duplicate elements, or remove text so you can personalize the card as much as you like.
Materials needed to make the card:
- the free SVGs – they are in the ZIP file design # 110 – Worst Mother’s Day Ever in the Free Files Folder
- (If you don’t have the password for the free files, fill in the form at the bottom of the page and it will be emailed to you.)
- full-size Cricut such as an Explore or Maker, or you can use the Cricut Joy with the draw method
- Blue LightGrip mat
- Scoring tip or stylus
- a printer if you’re using the Print then Cut method (this is my printer and I love it)
- Cricut fine-point pens if you’re using the drawing method
- Two pieces of 8.5 x 11 inch cardstock, one for the card base and one for the messages
- one 12×12 sheet of cardstock for the envelope
- glue such as Bearly Art Precision Crafting Glue or Art Glitter Glue

Using the Print then cut method for the card
Upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space and Ungroup it.
In the layers menu, select each element and change the color. (I used shades of purple as it was Z’s favorite color. )
To customize the shade even more, click on the word Advanced in the menu and the color wheel will appear.
After you’ve chosen all of the colors, and added or deleted elements if you like, highlight all of the layers and click on the Flatten icon.
You won’t be able to see the different colors while the operation type is still cut, but you’ll see them after they’re Flattened.
The butterflies on the card look very delicate when Print and Cut is used.
Remember that you can delete whatever text you want here.
Using cricut pens to draw the card
I used the Cricut .4 mm markers for this version of the card.
Upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space and Ungroup it.
Change all of the images and text to the Pen operation type.
Click on the little square as indicated to select the color of pen that you’d like to use.
Now, highlight all of the Pen layers and the cut piece below it. Then click on the Attach icon.
It should look like this now.
Do the same thing for the text side of the card.
The extra-fine point gel pens look the best for the text, in my opinion.
You’ll need to change layers on the card base and the envelope to Score, and Attach them to the cut piece below (as shown in the screenshot.)
The metallic markers were too thick to make the butterflies and text on the card look good, but they worked well on the envelope.
Another option is to foil the card.
