Download the free Twist and Pop Card SVG, and learn how to make a free hug card with this easy tutorial and free templates.

Twist and pop hug card with a red heart and outstretched arms.

Are you a hugger?

It’s so comforting to wrap your arms around someone you care about. There’s just something about a hug that makes you feel so much better.

A hug is a simple, yet powerful way to show love and support to someone special. Whether you’re going through a tough time, or just need a little extra love and support, a hug can make all the difference.

It’s not always possible to hug your loved ones, so I’ve created a hug that you can send through the mail.

I created the first hug card in 2020, when we were all in lockdown. It even came with a silly little poem about finally being able to hug again. It’s still way at the bottom of the free files folder.

Which file should I use for the free hug card?

In the Free Files Folder, there are two versions of this card.

There’s an SVG to be used with cutting machines such as a Cricut, and there’s a PDF if you want to print the card and use scissors to cut it. It’s an easy project for kids to color and cut. (I included the red heart too, in case you didn’t want to color at all.)

Several sheets of paper printed out with a free hug card template from a free printable PDF.

The free printable hug card PDF is design #99 – Twist & Pop Hug Card (Printable PDF).

— OR —

The free hug card SVG is design # 98 – Twist & Pop Hug Card SVG.

If you don’t know how to access the Free Files Folder, the directions are at the bottom of the page.

Materials needed to create this easy twist-n-pop hug card:

  • letter-sized 65 lb. cardstock
  • Glue such as Art Glitter Glue or Beacon’s 3-in-1 Crafting Glue
    Extra-Strong Double Sided Tape 5mm
  • A way to cut and score; I used my Cricut Maker and the scoring stylus. You can also easily cut this project by hand.
  • Bone folder for burnishing score lines

  • Printer (I love my Epson Wide-Format Photo Printer)

How to use the free twist and pop hug card SVG in Cricut Design Space:

Upload the SVG to Design Space and add it to your Canvas.

Ungroup the SVG.

We’ll use Print Then Cut for the sentiments.

Select one group of text and the shape below it. Then, click on the Flatten icon.

Here’s how it should look. Flatten the other sentiments that you want to use.

Hold down the shift key and select the four layers shown.

Now, change the line type to Score from the operation menu.

Click to select each group and Attach each score line to the cut piece below it.

Your four pieces should look like the screenshot below.

Finally, change the top lines to Score and Attach to the envelope.

Cut the pieces out of 8.5 x 11 inch cardstock.

Tip: Position the envelope on the mat carefully; it’s 10.88 inches so just fits on letter-size cardstock.

How to assemble the Twist and Pop Hug Card

1) Cut out the pieces of the card. You should have:

  • the card base
  • the twist and pop base
  • two of the heart with arms, one larger than the other

2) The purple dashed lines shown below are score lines. Fold and burnish the cardstock along the lines.

Case base and twist and pop card base shown with score lines in purple.

3) Glue the center of the card in place.

Glue the twist and pop base into the card base.

4) Fold the hearts along the lines as shown; then glue the smaller heart on top of the larger one.

Crease the hearts along the score lines.

5) Center the middle of the heart on the middle of the base.

6) The glue goes ONLY on the area marked below by the red X. It should not be in any other area, or the twist and pop mechanism will not work correctly.

7) Glue the heart in place, with just a small amount of glue where the red X is shown above.

8) Glue the large text box to the front of the card.

I accidentally glued this card really crooked! However, just glue in the inside sentiment…

… and it’s not noticeable at all.

You’re welcome! I saw your note about giving it in remembrance of a pet that passed; the flying heart is totally appropriate.
